Sports from the Past – San Francisco 49ers Defeat Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl XXIII

Sports from the past is a "This Day in Sports" feature of Our feature focuses on only one event from this day in the past and is something that our Editor in Chief can relate to and comment on. For more about this feature visit our first Sports from the Past post.

So what sports event occurred on this day in History?

It was January 22nd 1989 and it was late in the fourth quarter. Cincinnati had just kicked a field goal to go ahead 16-13. The problem for the Bengals is that they left a little too much time on the clock for Joe Montana.

Joe Montana marched his team down the field. Montana didn’t look scared or nervous. He displayed the confidence necessary to lead his team to victory.

With a 39 seconds left on the clock, Montana threw the game winning touchdown to John Taylor. The legend of Joe Montana continued to grow with that Super Bowl victory which was his third. Montana would go on to win one more Super Bowl.

I was twenty years old at the time and before the game winning drive, I was in shock that the Bengals were ahead late in the fourth quarter. I had feeling that Montana would find a way to win the game.

It was after this game that I became a Montana fan. He had broken my heart four years earlier when the 49ers crushed the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl XIX.

Montana was fun to watch. The guy was a general on the field and his confidence was amazing.
