We know that the New York Jets are a mess on the field. Their band of misfits continues to stink up the field and Geno Smith, the turnover machine, represents that mess on the field. Now Geno Smith and teammate Kellen Winslow are a mess off the field.
Yesterday, there were reports that Geno Smith go into an altercation with a flight attendant. There are conflicting stories. One story has Smith leaving the plane after he was asked to take his headphones off and didn't hear the flight attendant. The flight attendant removed them from him and Smith exited the plane.
Another report says Smith was asked to leave the plane due to being a flight risk after he failed to stop talking on his cell phone.
I don't know which version of the events are correct but at a minimum Smith should shoulder some of the blame. When a person is on a plane they need to respond to flight attendant and pilot requests in a positive manner. A passenger should not act like they are entitled to do what they want when they want to.
Some people resist authority. When I'm on a plane or in an airport, I listen to the orders being barked at me. What Geno Smith did wrong is he didn't pay attention to the orders being given to him. It doesn't matter if he agreed with them or not.
Geno Smith needs to act like a mature person and leader. Being a leader should occur both on the field and off it. Geno Smith has a lot to learn and he needs to do it quickly. This may be only one incident, an innocent incident but he will now be under a microscope wherever he goes.
Also this week another New York Han glider, I mean Jet was arrested for possession of synthetic marijuana. Reports accuse Winslow of also masturbating in public (according to a witness who said she saw him in the act).
If it's true that Winslow publicly fondled himself in public it's a sad case of young man being out of touch with reality. Doesn't he have a private place where he can stroke it? Doesn't he have a place where he can pleasure himself in private?
Winslow denies that he was masturbating but officers said his genitals were exposed when they got to the scene and they also saw two empty containers of Vaseline. I think the Vaseline is a give away in this one. Kellen should keep his mouth shut going forward. I'm not sure how he's going to explain the Vaseline.
These incidents show me that the New York Jets are as big a mess off the field as they are on it. Since they have a clown as their head coach, at least through 2015, don't count on the team doing much to reign in their players.
As mentioned earlier, leadership needs to occur both on and off the field. The New York Jets lack leadership in both places.
The Jets have a long way to go to gain the respect of their fans and events like the two that occurred this week show me that the Jets are a circus complete with clowns and misfits.
