Winnipeg Jets Game 1: Oil is Well as Jets Down Oliers

Article written by The Comish - Winnipeg Correspondent

MARK SCHEIFELE signed *WINNIPEG JETS* 8x10 photo hockey W/COAThe Winnipeg Jets 2.0 began their third regular season on the road yesterday with a victory but not just any old victory it was a come from behind 5-4 win. The come from behind win that featured stellar performances by Jacob Trouba, the fresh faced 19 year old rookie rearguard that scored his first career NHL goal and Michael Frolik, formerly of the Stanley Cup champion, Chicago Blackhawks who scored two goals including the game winner.

Ondrej Pavelic also came up big when he had to and made several highlight reel saves including one in the dying moments of the third period on an Oiler who was uncovered in front of the net. Pavelic squared up using his big frame prevented any damage from occurring.

There were many questions left unanswered by the Jets pre-season performance in light of the fact the Jets did not resign Nik Antopov, Ron Hainsey, Kyle Wellwood, Anti Meittenen or Mike Santorelli all of whom were featured players over the last 2 years.

However, their ‘replacements’ proved that they won’t (at least for this game) be missed as Frolik, Trouba and Scheifele all contributed offensively whereas the ‘dearly departed’ rarely contributed points on the same night.  However

The jury is still out on Devon Setoguchi who is still looking for his ‘wings’ as he gets accustomed to playing with Evander Kane and Schiefele although the coach has said this line is not set in stone.

The infusion of new talent in the Jets starting lineup seemed to pay dividends more than just offensively as the squad had some jump to their game that was sorely lacking on many nights over the past 2 years.

There are still 81 games to play but this is a game to build off of because despite the many turnovers, selfish penalties (Mr.Byfuglien I am talking to you even though you cannot hear me) and numerous shot attempts that were launched wide of or over the Oilers net this team was able to deal with the adversity of being down by 2 goals and mount a comeback on the road no less.

The good that came out of this game is that the Jets got the ‘W’, Trouba showed he has more than potential, Ollie Jokinen may have found line mates he can play with, Bryan Little got in on the scoring, Pavelic stood out, the Jets did not have to rely on the first line to carry the game and Byfuglien was a force.

The bad is that Pavelic stood out meaning there were several defensive break downs, the Jets got caught as Coach Noel likes to say ‘chasing the game’ at times and Evander Kane remains an enigma.

The jets have a date with the L.A. Kings on Friday night for their home opener, which should be a much stiffer test as the Oilers were without their 2 top centers and Devan Dubynik did not have his best game. The Kings are an elite team with one of the best goalies in the league in Jonathon Quick but until then the Jets are tied for first in their division with the mighty Black Hawks. Let's hope we can say the same thing after game 82!
