Baltimore Ravens Ranked #1 in Sports Illustrated Pre-Season Rankings? C'Mon Dude

In his 2013 pre-season NFL rankings, Chris Burke of Sports Illustrated has ranked the Baltimore Ravens #1. I say to Burke; Are you crazy? The reasoning behind Burke's insanity is "A matter of principle here...you don't boot the defending Super Bowl champs from their perch before they play a game".

I think this guy is silly. I think that it's ridiculous to rank a team #1 just because they won the Super Bowl the year before. How many repeat champions (back to back years) have there been since 2000? The 2005 and 2006 New England Patriots is the only team to repeat during this time period.

I don't think that any real expert would consider the Ravens better or more dominant than the 2005 and 2006 New England Patriots. There isn't a real precedent here to automatically rank a previous champion as the favorite going into the new season. At least I don't think so.

I would rank the Ravens #7 heading into this season. I think Joe Flacco is overrated and will return to form as an average quarterback in 2013. I think winning the Super Bowl has gone to his head.

For me the only thing in Baltimore's favor is their weak schedule. I think they will make the playoffs but will have to get lucky to repeat as NFL champions.

I do think that Baltimore is among the top teams in the AFC but the NFC is much stronger. If they are lucky enough to get to the big game, I don't see much of a chance that the Ravens will raise the Vince Lombardi Trophy.the

I'm sick of so called experts giving a team like the Baltimore Ravens the benefit of the doubt just because they won the Super Bowl the previous year. That's not only ridiculous but I think Burke took the easy and lazy approach to his ranking.

I might be wrong and it wouldn't be the first time but I think that Burke's analysis is lacking and it cheapens his rankings that would otherwise be pretty good. At least based on what we know.

I don't take much issue with his 2 through 7 rankings, although I think that his #8 ranking of the New England Patriots is generous. I think that the Patriots are in a world of hurt and they will really have to fight to make the playoffs.

I was hoping to have an enjoyable read with the rankings. Who doesn't like rankings, especially when they are well written and entertaining? From the start of Burke's ranking I was left with a bad taste of rotten Ravens.

Sure I might be proven wrong if the Ravens repeat but the odds are with me. So I will stand by my opinion.
