Adrian Peterson Sets Ridiculous Goal for Achieving the NFL Career Rushing Record

This week Adrian Peterson (AP) said he would break Emmitt Smith's career rushing record by week 16 of the 2017 season. What is he smoking? The guy is seriously out to lunch and while he's a great back I think it will take a couple of years past the 2017 season for AP to have a chance of breaking Smith's record.

AP has five full seasons to try and achieve his goal. Let's put all this in perspective. Emmitt Smith's record is 18.355 yards (ESPN.com). AP currently has 8,849 career rushing yards (ESPN.com). That means that AP would have to rush for 9,506 yards by week 16 of the 2017 season. That's 1,901 yards per season.

AP has rushed for over 1,900 yards only once in his 6 year career. I'm guessing AP didn't do the math. I think the chances of him achieving his goal are slim to none. Can he break Emmitt's rushing record? Sure but it would likely be in the 2019 season or later.

I do give credit to AP for setting such a lofty goal but its one thing to have a lofty goal and another thing to set nearly impossible to reach goals.

I don't like AP going public with his goal setting. Emmitt is the greatest running back in the history of the NFL. I think he deserves some respect. Publicly stating a ridiculous goal like AP did, makes him look like a clown.

I love AP. He's a great back and plays for my Minnesota Vikings but I like humble players. AP seems to be a good guy but he's been opening his yap lately. He will look like a moron if he fails to break Emmitt's record.

AP already has a target on his back and opening his big mouth makes that target even bigger. I sure hope he reaches his lofty goal. That would be awesome. It would give Vikings fans something to cheer about, since winning a Super Bowl is even more remote than AP's far fetched goal.

Will it be impossible for AP to reach his goal? I wouldn't go as far as that. He's a great back who achieved great success last year against all the odds. If there's anyone who can set and reach ridiculous goals it's AP.
