Drama in Detroit - The Chicago Blackhawks Win in the Shootout

Article written by Sportmentary - Editor in Chief Sportmentary Online Sports Talk
The Chicago Blackhawks and the Detroit Redwing played a back and forth game. The Red Wings looked like they would win this game when they had a 1-0 lead until Detroit took a delay the game penalty (Puck shot out without touching the glass) That gave the Blakhawks the power play and they didn’t let that opportunity slip away as they tied the game with 2:02 left. The goal was scored by Patrick Kane.

Both teams had their chances and both goaltenders played great hockey making unbelievable saves. Detroit netminder Jimmy Howard and Chicago Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford were absolutely amazing. With 1:23 left Detroit took another delay of game penalty (similar to the one they took earlier). The Hawks failed to score during regulation on that penalty and the game went to Overtime (OT) with Chicago having a power play for the first 38 seconds.

With the game being sent into OT, Chicago extended their historic record of going the most games in a row with at least one point. That streak now stands at 22 games, 19 of them being wins. That’s incredible.

The Blackhawks failed to score on their power play. Detroit continued the pressure in the overtime but Crawford came up big once again.

The action this afternoon was fast and furious. It was an exciting game. I can’t believe how well Howard and Crawford played in net. It was amazing to see.

The Blackhawks are a very good team. They don’t seem to have any weaknesses on their squad. They have the ability to score, a good defense and good goaltending.

The OT ended with no one scoring a goal to end it. So the game went to the shootout. A great game with tons of drama got even more dramatic. Who would win this game? It was up in the air.

Crawford came up big in OT, shutting out the Red Wings by stopping their three attempts. The Blackhawks got a goal on their second attempt and the the Blackhawks are now 19-0-3. That’s incredible. There isn’t a team that’s close to them in the standings. They are on fire and there is no sign that the fire is going to be extinguished any time soon.

This was the game that could have ended the Chicago Blackhawks historic beginning to the 2013 NHL season. Detroit played well and had tons of chances to end the game. They outplayed Chicago in the third period but in the end it was bad mistake by Jonathan Ericsson that cost the Red Wings the game. Shooting the puck out of his zone without it touching anything was a mental mistake that gave Chicago the opportunity to tie the game and extend their streak.

You can’t give Chicago that type of opportunity. They will burn you every time. They didn’t disappoint their faithful. This is a gritty team. This is a team with tons of fight in them. They are exciting to watch, especially if you’re a fan like me.
