NFL Must Cancel Panthers Chiefs Game Now

The unthinkable happened today in Kansas City. Jovan Belcher of the Kansas City Chiefs killed his girlfriend and then drove to Arrowhead Stadium where head coach Rome Crennel and GM Scott Pioli tried to calm the young man down. That didn't happen. Belcher turned the gun on himself. This is a tragic incident for the Chiefs.

As if nothing could be worse for the 1-10 Chiefs. Now they have to deal with this. The NFL contacted the Panthers and told them to plan as if the game was going to continue. This is the wrong move. This is a tragedy. You have two team officials who witnessed this gruesome act. A couple of players might have as well.

How will they be able to put this behind them so quickly? They can't. This is bigger than football. Football is just a game but this is real life. The team needs time to heel. Out of respect for Belcher's girlfriend, they should not play the game.

An NFL player has just taken the life of his girlfriend and himself and you are going to play football? That's ridiculous. That's just my opinion. How could the team regroup after this? I can't imagine the pain and sadness that they are feeling.

I can't imagine how Romeo and Scott can deal with this. Sure they are professionals but nothing in the coaching and GM handbooks can prepare someone for this horrific crime. While I'm not a fan of the Chiefs, my heart goes out to them and I hope that they are able to get past this awful situation.

There is only one thing that I'm certain about regarding this crime. The NFL must cancel the game.
