Pablo and Zito Keep the Momentum Alive

Pablo Sandoval and Barry Zito kept the momentum alive for the San Francisco Giants as they destroyed the Detroit Tigers in game 1. I thought the Tigers, led by starting pitcher Justin Verlander would make the game much closer than it was and would win game 1. Boy was I wrong.

Barry Zito pitched 5.2 innings and looked good again. The Tigers just couldn't score any runs off him, even when they had their best chances. They had chances in the first and 5th innings. Tim Lincecum came on in the 6th to extinguish a Tigers threat for the last out of the inning.

The star of the game has to be Pablo Sandoval. In his first 3 at bats, he homered 3 times. He became the only player other than Babe Ruth, Reggie Jackson and Albert Pujols to hit 3 home runs in a World Series game. That's quite the company to be named with. In his 4th at bat, he singled. He went 4-4.

Let's not forget to give an honorable mention to Tim Linceum who came in to relieve Zito. The guy was lights out. In the 7 pitchers he faced (2.1 innings), Lincecum had 5 strikeouts and didn't give up a hit.

San Francisco would go on to win the game 8-3. They have obliterated their opponents by a combined margin of 23-4 in the last 3 games. That's pretty good, don't you think? The Giants are proving that they have power in their lineup as well. Everyone's talking about their pitching (Starting pitching and relief pitchers) but the bats have come alive as well and they don't show any signs of letting up.

Winning game 1 was huge for the Giants. They extinguished Justin Verlander early. Verlander is the key to helping the Tigers win the World Series.Game 1's loss just made it much tougher for the Tigers to realize their dream.

I predicted that the Tigers would win the World Series in 5 games and they still can. They will need to win game 2 if they have any chance of not only winning in 5 but winning the World Series at all. The Giants have shown that when the pressure has been on their opponents in the last 4 games, their opponents have crumbled.

Detroit now has their backs against the wall. Yes, it's only game 1 but the home crowd is going to be crazy in game 2. The Tigers will have to come out early. Their power hitters need to show up and do their jobs. If the don't, it will be lights out.

The Giants are riding high right now. They aren't showing any signs that things will change. The Giants have good pitching. Their relief staff is great. Zito and Sandoval have given their team a huge momentum builder, as if they even needed it.

I think the Tigers will come out strong in game 2. If they do, this series is really going to heat up. At the very least the San Francisco Giants are an exciting and entertaining team to watch. They're really easy to love right now.
