Hope Prevails

I've written scathing articles recently regarding the atrocious officiating by a Norwegian referee who robbed Canada of their chance at going for gold and comments by the USA soccer team. Today isn't the time for what should have been and what was.

Today is the time to give credit to the USA Women's soccer team which played a great match against Japan. If we look at things honestly, Team USA was the best team in the tournament. Today, the team was tested by a very good Japan squad who had many chances.

It was Hope Solo's amazing goalkeeping that allowed Team USA to win the gold medal. I'm not taking anything away from Carli Loyd who scored two goals and the other USA players who did their part to win gold, but it was Hope Solo who made brilliant save after brilliant save that was the difference in this match.

From a soccer fan's perspective, it was great to see soccer in the big time, in front of tens of thousands of cheering fans at Wembley Stadium. This was a great moment for the Women's game. The final was a great game, with scoring chances, great defense and great goalkeeping.

I've mentioned this before but the women's tournament at the London Olympics have been far more exciting than the Men's game. The games featured more goals, more scoring chances and more excitement. I've been a fan of women's soccer for about 10 years but the London games were different. Most of the games were competitive and exciting.

Over 80,000 fans were at Wembley Stadium to see the gold medal match today. I think it's safe to say that Women's soccer has come a long way and it is the big time now.

This game and the Semi-Final against Canada were two of the greatest women's soccer matches of all time. I would argue that the Semi-Final game was one of the greatest soccer games of all time (men or women). I can't remember a match that was so back and forth with 7 goals being scored.

As I said, it's time to put my anger aside about what transpired in the Semi-Final. It's time to give credit to Team USA who had a tremendous tournament. We learned today that Hope prevailed. Hope, int he form of goalkeeper Solo an dhope in the form of a gold medal for Team USA.
