Daily Honor Roll - August 24th, 2012

It has been a few days since Sportmentary has posted an honor roll. There just hasn't been anyone worthy of being honored. Today I do have an entry and it comes courtesy of the CFL (Canadian Football League). I don't usually honor a team or player that loses. Today is different.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers - Winnipeg was a huge underdog to the mighty BC Lions. Winnipeg actually greatly outplayed the Lions in the 2nd half, erasing a 10-0 deficit. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers defense played another good game, giving up only 20 points to the CFL's top team.

Joey Elliott, who started his second game, came to play in the 2nd half. He was calm and collected on the field and looked like a leader. He directed his offense well and if not for a few unfortunate plays, the Bombers could have won the game.

Elliott led his offense on a  drive that tied the game with just 27 ticks on the clock. In the CFL, 27 seconds is an eternity. The Lions made the Bombers pay by notching a field goal with no time left on the clock.

The Bombers actually tackled a Lions player with 1 second left. That gave the Lions the ability to kick the game winning field goal. Had the Bombers defense been aware that time was running out, they could have waited an extra second before tackling the Lions receiver.

The Bombers fall to 2-6 and Sportmentary has an empty feeling. It was a very tough loss for Big Blue but I'm extremely proud of their effort.
