Bad Call!

The NFL and NFLRA are currently in a labor dispute. The NFLRA represents the NFL's officials. It is looking like there is a good possibility that the 2012 NFL season will start with replacement officials. It is likely that we might see bad calls being made by the replacements.

I'm not a big fan of having replacements. There's too much on the line. First and foremost is the safety of the players. NFL officials are entrusted to be the first to watch over player safety and possible concussions that may occur.

I don't feel that unskilled referees will have the ability or skills to be able to handle potentially career ending injuries. If I were a player, I would be scared to play with replacements.

The other issue is that replacements are inferior to regular officials. There's a lot for officials to know and the game is faster and more skilled than any game that the replacements have ever seen. If you think that regular referees make bad calls, just wait until the replacement officials take the field.

I think as fans we've forgotten that officials are part of the NFL product. We focus on the players and their skills but officials allow the game to be fluid and progress at a professional pace.

I fear that we are in for a circus this fall. With hat circus will come angry players who are mad at the bad calls and fans who fell slighted and cheated by the poor officiating.

The NFL needs to resolve this issue. NFL officials don't make lots of money. I would argue that they may even me underpaid and undervalued. The NFL has to right this ship and the damage that may have been caused by the conflict between them and the NFLPA.

If this issue isn't resolved, I fear we will be seeing lost of bad calls and I don't want that to happen.
