I'll Have Another Triple Crown Disappointment

I'm not much of a horse racing fan. I'll occasionally watch the Kentucky Derby and will watch the Belmont Stakes, which is the third leg of horse racing's Triple Crown, if a horse has chance of earning that accomplishment.

I was all set to watch this year's Belmont Stakes after I'll Have Another won the Kentucky Derby and then the Preakness Stakes that followed. The horse was the odds on favorite to win the Belmont Stakes and the triple Crown. It's been 34 years since a horse has one the Triple Crown. That's a long time to wait for horsing fans that want to see a triple Crown winner in their lifetime.

I guess I'll have another disappointment this year, since I'll Have Another has been retired from the race. It seems as if the horse has developed what seems to be the beginning of tendinitis. That's too bad but the right decision was made. You don't want to take chances that a horse will suffer permanent injury.

This is a huge let down for NBC, horse racing tracks and other venues who are planning on televising the big race on Saturday. It was expected that viewership would double or even triple for this race, due to the potential of a horse winning the Triple Crown.

I'm sure the casual fan like myself will not tune in to the race now that the excitement has subsided. For me, the race has lost its luster and excitement. I feel like the wind has been let out of my sails. while there are other big sporting events on Saturday, the Belmont Stakes was going to open my sports event viewing.

I had planned to sit down and watch the Belmont Stakes and then tune into game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals and game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals of the NBA. Then there was the possibility of following the big fight between Pacquiao and Bradley. That's quite a lot to take in for a sports fan.

Now my Saturday is a little less full with the retiring of an exciting horse named, I'll Have Another. I'm in shock. I'm sure you're like me and that you couldn't see this coming. I guess I'll have to enjoy the nice weather outside. We have to take advantage of as many nice days, here in Minnesota. That being said, it's still disappointing that I'll have to wait another year for the chance of witnessing a Triple Crown winning horse.

It's worth mentioning that the main thing isn't my selfish sports viewing desires but the health of the horse. I'm willing to give up the chance of witnessing history if it means that it's in the horse's best interests and health.
