Icing Your Own Kicker

Have you heard of an NFL coach icing his own kicker?  I hadn't until today.  Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett did just that Sunday afternoon in Arizona.  With his team having a chance at a game winning field goal, Garrett called a time out.  The problem is that the kick was good.  After the time out, Dallas missed the field goal and went on to lose the game in OT.

Garrett made an idiotic decision.  Usually an opposing coach will call a timeout to ice the opposing kicker.  I've never heard of a coach trying to ice his own kicker.  This has to go down as one of the most idiotic coaching decisions ever.

Now at 7-5, Dallas has given the NY Giants a chance at competing for a division title and a playoff spot. Garrett had two timeouts with just under 30 seconds left in the game.  He could have tried to move the ball closer and used his timeouts wisely.  Instead this guy used a timeout at a critical moment in the game and iced his kicker.

What was at stake?  With 4 games remaining the Cowboys would have had a two game lead on the Giants.  While it wouldn't have locked up the divisional title, it would have been extremely difficult for the Giants to catch up.
