The Good Guy, Jim Thome Hits Number 600

Jim Thome of the Minnesota Twins joined seven other players when he hit his 600th home run tonight against the Detroit Tigers.  Thome became the second fastest player to reach this mark (ESPN.com).  Babe Ruth was the fastest.  Thome hit home runs 599 and 600 in the game.

Hooray for Jim.  Thome deserved this milestone.  He's a hard working player, a blue-collar type player who's a non nonsense guy.  He's one of my favorite Twins, not only because he's Mr. Reliable but because of his dedication to the game.

Thome is well liked by teammates and fans.  I've never heard a bad word uttered about the guy.  What's there not to like?  If you're a fan who's spent your hard working dollars, you love the guy.  You get your money's worth watching him hit that little white ball.

If you're a manager, you love the guy.  You have a decent chance that he'll be able to drive in the game winning run when the game's on the line.  Last year when the Twins were fighting for the division title, Thome came through a number of times.

You can call Thome Mr. Clutch as well.  As I mentioned above, he's a reliable palyer who gives his team a chance to win when he comes to the plate.  That makes him a fan favorite.

He's not a fan favorite only for his skills and ability to produce but also due to the fan's perception of Thome being one of the good guys.  He's a nice guy who seems to be humble.  Most of what we know about Thome comes from watching him play and what the media thinks about him.  The media genuinely likes him.

So I say "hooray", "hooray".  Way to go Jim!

  1. If you look at modern baseball stats from a legit versus juiced perspective as a significant number of people do, and eliminate the questionable numbers put up by Bonds, Sosa, and Rodriguez, then Thome is actually number five on the all-time HR list.

He definitely should be a first ballot Hall of Famer.
